NPL Management Limited (NPL) is the UK's National Measurement Institute and a center of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate measurement standards, science and technology available. NPL employs over 500 scientists, based in south-west London. NPL has developed and maintained the nation's primary measurement standards. These standards underpin the National Measurement System infrastructure of traceability throughout the UK and the world, to ensure accuracy and consistency of measurement. Further NPL delivers measurement solutions that are critical to commercial research and development, and support business success across the UK and the globe.
The core activities of NPL are
NPL performs R&D in material properties, device performance and new application concepts. The research for the REProMag project is focused on materials with electrical and magnetic functionality, specifically:
- Properties of hard and soft magnetic materials
- Magnetic material measurements for real operating conditions such as temperature and complex geometries
- Magnetic field standards for the calibration of magnetometers and gradiometers in the range pT to several T at DC to 150 kHz
Role and contribution to REProMag
The NPL 50 mm bore Pulsed Field Magnetometer (PFM) will be calibrated and used to measure the properties of permanent magnets for non-standard conditions. Within the REProMag project this includes permanent magnets with complex geometries that cannot be measured with the conventional electromagnetic method. Properties at the temperature of use are needed and since the electromagnet method cannot be modified to provide these results the NPL 50 mm PFM is used. NPL also provides general expertise in characterising hard magnetic materials using internationally accepted standard procedures for purchase and sale.
